POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager, this position is responsible for providing culturally appropriate professional behavioral health and substance abuse treatment services for the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. This position works with a diverse population from children to elders. As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, the Behavioral Health Clinician will fulfill the mission of continuous quality improvement of behavioral health and substance abuse treatment services and will assist in achieving the strategic priorities of NHBP within the scope and responsibilities of this position.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities, and positions titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government. The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, and skills required of personnel so classified.

  1. Interviews clients, family members and other interested parties to assess needs for behavioral health and substance abuse treatment; completes thorough and timely mental health screenings and psycho-social assessments including DSM-5 diagnostic impressions.

  2. Provides culturally appropriate treatment services for children, adolescents, adults and elders including couples and family treatment, group treatment and psycho-social educational groups, and crisis intervention and follow-up.

  3. Develops person centered treatment plans with a person centered approach, evaluates and monitors client progress toward treatment goals and communicates clearly with clients in regards to their progress. Updates treatment plans regularly and according to policy and procedures.

  4. Provides a clinical assessment regarding the end of services; provides discharge summaries, follow-up care, referrals, and aftercare planning as required by policy and procedures.

  5. Coordinates and assists with mental health inpatient treatment including discharge planning and aftercare.

  6. Performs case management duties as they relate to but not limited to social services, child welfare, and medical as assigned or as required to meet the needs of clients, including but not limited to phone calls, referrals, follow-up, scheduling, “warm hand offs”, contacts with client’s family, collaboration with internal and external service providers.

  7. In the absence of or assists the case manager with duties related to substance use disorder care coordination including treatment coordination, discharge planning, aftercare, case management, submission of claims for reimbursement of services, and maintaining professional relationship with treatment facilities.

  8. In the absence of or assists with BH Consultant duties as they relate to but not limited to the BH needs of Medical/Dental patients. This can include stepping into medical/dental visits to offer additional and BH specific support and guidance, consulting with medical and/or dental providers in regard to clients presenting with BH related needs, assisting with BH referrals, making referrals/connections outside of NHBP services, offering brief and solution focused BH intervention including crisis and substance use disorder interventions, providing screenings and brief interventions for a plethora of BH related concerns, etc.

  9. Documents and maintains case files, both electronic and paper files, in accordance to policy and procedures.

  10. Prepares narrative and statistical reports, documents correspondence regarding client status, may provide court reports or testimony.

  11. Complies with legal requirements regarding reports of child, elder or vulnerable adult abuse, neglect and or exploitation.

  12. Collaborates and maintains positive working relationships with other internal and external professions and professionals.

  13. Assists and participates in tribal outreach, education, events or activities.

  14. Participates in department meetings as directed and/or appropriate, including task forces, staff meetings, team meetings, case consultation, clinical supervision and other relevant meetings.

  15. Participates in a wide range of ongoing learning and self-assessment in regards to the multitude of client needs including mental health and substance use, domestic violence, child abuse/neglect, foster care, infant mental health, trauma, medically fragile, etc., in order to perform a multitude of treatment modalities within one’s scope of practice.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
An applicant’s education, training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions. The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education, experience, and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associated within this position:

  1. Master’s degree in social work, or closely related field (Professional Counseling or Psychology) including course work in psychology, counseling, sociology, child development, geriatrics, or other behavioral or health sciences.

  2. Must be licensed in field of practice and be in good standing in the State of Michigan.

  3. Three years of experience in the field of social work, psychology, counseling or behavioral health sciences.

  4. Demonstrated competency in adhering to all ethical responsibilities related to the field of social work.

  5. Experience working with Tribal government or Native American institutions.

  6. Ability to understand, gain knowledge and appreciate the differences with the Native American culture and customs.

  7. A willingness to initiate contacts with new people.

  8. Familiarity with public assistance and social service systems, including special programs for members of Tribal organizations.

  9. Ability to counsel and take appropriate action in emergency or stressful situations.

  10. Strong organization and data management skills; ability to maintain both physical and electronic files.

  11. Ability to maintain good working relationships with tribal members, co-workers, community resources and the general public.

  12. Ability to work cooperatively as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.

  13. Proven organizational and time management skills; self-starter and self-directed; effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

  14. Excellent professional judgement, discretion and problem solving skills.

  15. Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work.

  16. Good oral and written communication skills, including public speaking in both large and small groups.

  17. Must maintain a valid driver’s license with good driving record; GSA certifiable.

  18. Must be able to travel.

  19. Must be able to successfully pass a background check: must not have been found guilty of, or pled guilty or no contest to, any felony or misdemeanor offense under federal, state or tribal law involving crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, prostitution, or other crimes against persons, or offenses committed against children; must be able to successfully pass a drug screening.

  20. Ability to become CPR/ First Aid certified as training becomes available.

  21. Computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheets, email and internet.

  22. Ability to maintain confidentiality, including a demonstrated understand and application of HIPAA.

  23. Ability to work with constant interruptions and adjust schedule as needed or necessary.

  24. Must be able to work flexible hours when necessary or directed.

  25. Professional demeanor and appearance.




PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  1. Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor or willing to obtain.

  2. Knowledge of Indian Health Service regulations and RPMS.

  3. Well-developed knowledge of the historical trauma of indigenous tribal communities and trauma informed care in a general health settings.

  4. Ability to provide Solution Focused Brief Therapy and other short-term treatment approaches of an Integrated Behavioral Health Model.
