Position Overview
St. Thomas University’s Health & Wellness Center seeks a compassionate and skilled Mental Health Counselor to provide culturally responsive mental health services to a diverse student body. This includes first-generation college students and individuals from various socio- economic and cultural backgrounds. The counselor will offer short-term individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and mental health outreach to support students’ academic success, emotional well-being, and personal growth.
This role requires collaboration with university faculty, staff, and student support services to foster a campus culture that prioritizes mental health and holistic wellness.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students managing stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, trauma, identity development, and other personal concerns.
- Conduct mental health screenings, risk assessments, and crisis intervention services, ensuring timely referrals when necessary.
- Develop and implement treatment plans tailored to students' unique backgrounds and needs.
- Collaborate with student organizations, faculty, campus departments, and ministries to provide integrated mental health support.
- Design and lead educational workshops and outreach programs on topics such as stress management, coping strategies, emotional resilience, and suicide prevention, with a focus on underrepresented and at-risk student populations.
- Maintain confidential and accurate records in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and university policies.
- Stay informed on best practices in college mental health counseling through ongoing professional development, case consultations, and training opportunities.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Active Florida licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) OR status as a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern working toward licensure.
- Experience working with young adults in a clinical setting.
- Strong crisis intervention skills and experience with brief therapy models.
